Understanding the Hijri calendar
The Hijri (Islamic) calendar is a lunar calendar of 12 months of 29 or 30 days — 354 or 355 days a year, about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. That is why Ramadan, Eid and Hajj move roughly ten days earlier each Gregorian year. Year 1 marks the Hijra, the Prophet's ﷺ migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE.
The twelve months are Muharram, Safar, Rabi' al-Awwal, Rabi' al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qi'dah and Dhu al-Hijjah. Four of them are sacred months: Dhu al-Qi'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab.
Why a date can differ by a day or two
There are several ways to fix the Islamic calendar. The computed calendar (astronomical method) sets the start of each month from the actual position of the moon: it is what Android phones, most apps — and Sandouq — display. The tabular calendar is purely arithmetic (alternating 30- and 29-day months over a 30-year cycle) and can drift one day from the astronomical calculation. Finally, the observational calendar starts each month at the actual sighting of the crescent, which is what religious authorities follow for Ramadan and the festivals; Saudi Arabia publishes its own Umm al-Qura calendar, based on its own astronomical criteria.

Why is my Hijri date different from the one announced in my country?
Because this converter uses a standard astronomical calculation, while religious authorities rely on actual moon sighting (or, in Saudi Arabia, on the Umm al-Qura calendar, whose criteria differ slightly). The gap is at most 1–2 days and mostly affects the start of months.
Is the Hijri calendar used for Zakat?
Yes: Zakat is due when your wealth stays above the Nisab for a full lunar year (hawl, about 354 days). Many people pick a fixed Hijri date — often in Ramadan — to calculate it every year. The Sandouq app tracks this hawl for you.
